Notes From The Flip Side: 01.23.2000
The other night, I couldn't sleep very well. I kept dreaming about my ex-fiancee. I don't even remember what I dreamed. I just woke up feeling an absence next to me. It's been almost a year since she and I slept in the same bed. Hell, it's almost been a year since I've seen her, but I still remember how she looked when I woke up beside her on Sunday mornings, the winter sun shining on her bare shoulder, her lips slightly parted as she dozed. And I still can't quite shake the memory of her walking away with her new lover, his hand intimately placed in the small of her back - the same lover she had been having an affair with for months. She and I don't talk anymore. We may share the same city and the same sun, but where a ring once bound us, I now bear the scars of surgical separation. When people have an arm or leg amputated, they may still feel its presence; I've heard it called phantom limb syndrome. Maybe I'm just coping with the aftermath of phantom girl syndrome.
