Cindy Lee Berryhill
"Straight Outta Marysville" CD (Cargo)
After releasing Garage Orchestra last year to rave reviews, anti-folk hero Cindy Lee Berryhill reflects on her experiences while crossing the country by bus with nothing more than a backpack and a guitar in hand. When she arrived in New York, she enjoyed the company of such acoustic rebels as Beck, Roger Manning and Brenda Kahn. While their presence no doubt left some impression on her, Berryhill remains faithful to her contemplative musings. "High Jump" is a good reflection on the absurdity of teenage competition while "Riddle Riddle" is a colorful kick in the dick to chauvinists. I don't know if she still works at the bookstore in Hillcrest (next to the Guild Theater), but if she does, stop in and say hi. I once bought a Dick Gregory book from her and she's really nice. (ERIC)
