"Big Hat, No Cattle" CD (Headhunter)
When this record kicks off, it sounds like a bunch of barely competent musicians playing at music, but the introduction is deceptive. As it progresses and the band breaks into a crescendo of noise, chaotic riffs and melody, throwing all three together simultaneously, it's clearly evident that the initial noodlings were carefully planned and designed to lead into the song. The rest of the album isn't much different - apparent chaos which breaks into tightly controlled dynamic musical passages, rising and falling like 10-foot swells off the coast of Ocean Beach, leaving the same sinking feeling in your stomach as you slip into a trough and can only see water around you, knowing full well a motherfucker of a wave is about to hit.
