"Punk Rock Jukebox" CD (Blackout)

Call it a mixed bag - about one third of these songs are killer punk, another third are simply filler, and the final third are covers which should have stayed buried under whatever rock covered them. The Swingin' Utters' cover of Cocksparrer's "I Got Your Number," The Goops' version of Stiff Little Fingers' "Barbed Wire Love," Brody's rendition of Dag Nasty's "Justification" and H2O's run-through of Marginal Man's "Friend" are the standouts on this disc, each capturing the same spirit as the original while putting a new spin on it. The New Bomb Turks, 88 Fingers Louie, Waterdog and Trusty all offer tracks which elevate this disc above the usual lame cover compilation, but the rest of this album is just a comparative waste of aluminum. Good idea, decent execution. Not essential.
