Guv'ner

"The Hunt" CD (Merge)

Simply put, a little silver disc covered with digital Etch-a-Sketch doesn't do Guv'ner justice for the musical sincerity their live show brings. Nevertheless, what the vaguely 60's pop influenced band sometimes lacks in moving music it makes up for in its often subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle sarcasm. Anybody who rewrites the chorus to Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" to reference the Christian Messiah's three-year egocentric brainwashing of the Jews before his crucifixion ("I'm so vain / I know this song is about me / I'm so vain / Now this song is about me" from "Nazarene") has something good going for them.
